983: Spectral Voyages
(1983)
“A
recording artist’s first album is something that can only
happen once. As I listen to this record today, I see it as a time
capsule of who I was at that time in my life.”

991: Music+Art (1991)
“Feeling
the need to do something more aggressive than the music that Lanz
and I were doing, this album became that journey. Music+Art is titled
as such because I was creating paintings simultaneously as the music
was recorded so each piece has a corresponding visual.”

Paul
Speer's second solo album. A progressive rock feel permeates this
record and features performances from David Lanz, new age icon Michael

ECLECTIC
EARWIG REVIEW
COLLECTION 991: MUSIC + ART by Paul Speer will not be immediately
as notable to many rockers, fusionists, or progressive rock folk.
Speer comes from a strong background, and famous lineage of . .
. uhh, well NEW AGE releases. Don't skip off too soon now. When
David Lanz was tickling those transcendental ivories, Speer was
providing a steady subdued rhythm and crunch on guitar, electric
that is, and Speer was precise and restrained. The aura called it
so.
But now, on this solo release, Speer lets his rockin', jazzy, and
riffmeister hair down. Synthesist extraordinaire Michael Stearns
and even David Lanz himself add great keyboards. Speer excels on
guitars and does his own synth playing as well. I enjoyed this high-caliber
post-New Age rocker.

“I
was commissioned to do a soundtrack for a guided meditation CD and
this is the music from that project. Done entirely on keyboards,
it is a serene moment in time very different from my other albums.”

Grammy
nominated musician/video artist Paul Speer releases his latest CD/DVD
project entitled Oculus. As one of the architects of the multi-platinum
selling video albums Natural States and Desert Vision, he traveled
down a different path on this release. That path lead to several
locations in Italy: Rome, Florence, the Italian Riviera, Tuscany,
and Sicily.
The
Pantheon's Oculus (the opening on top of the rotunda) offers a portal
to the open sky. This music video transports one through the Oculus
and on to a remarkable visual journey, giving the viewer a unique
look at Bella Italia. Shot in Cinema Verite style, it is a work
of art that pays homage to the beauty and history of one of the
most enchanting places in the world.
Paul
composed a modern instrumental soundtrack (mixed in 5.1 surround
sound) for each piece that evokes an extraordinary mood, which takes
the viewer deep into each location for a consummate audiovisual
experience.
